Description
Photo taken of one of the Winged Figure of the Republic, located at the crest of Hoover Dam. Note the feet of the sculpture is bright bronze in color from the tourists touching it since 1935 for good luck. When first placed here, both figures were bright bronze in color.
Oskar J. W. Hansen (March 9, 1891 -September 1971) was a Norwegian-born, naturalized American sculptor. He is most associated with the design of many of the sculptures on and around the Hoover Dam. This sculpture is among numerous examples of his sculpture in Art Deco mode commissioned by the US Bureau of Reclamation. Surrounding the base is a terrazzo floor, inlaid with a star chart/celestial map. The chart preserves for future generations the exact date on which President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Dam. In the center of the floor are the important stars and features of the Polar region of the sky as they would appeared at 8:56pm 2.25 secs local apparent time on September 30, 1935 when the structure was dedicated.

Thank you for your comments, Reynold! We had been on the Hoover Dam Tour back in the '70's and we never saw this, either. The Art Deco artwork on the elevator doors was also stunning artwork. Thanks for the FAV
