Description
Photo taken by my sister-in-law, Nancy Noyes on the "Painted Church Tour" of Saints Cyril and Methodius Church in Dubina, Texas.
Originally settled in 1856 by Czech immigrants, the town of Dubina is now a ghost town, all that remains is a large cemetery, meeting hall and the impressive Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. Towering above the countryside, the church still draws a very active following from scattered farms and houses for miles around, even though the town itself has faded away. Constructed a hundred years ago and recently restored, this church is part of the tour of Painted Churches of Texas, with elaborate stained glass windows and colorful interiors.
Dubina is a small unincorporated community in Fayette County, Texas, United States. It currently is home to a population of about 44 persons, but it was once a thriving community. It was the first Czech settlement in Texas and dates from 1856. It's located 90 miles West of Houston or 104 miles East of San Antonio.
The naming of this settlement as Dubina ("oak grove") goes back to one of the first nights spent by the settlers. As the story goes, the settlers were travelling looking for a suitable place to settle down when it started raining. They sat down under a very large oak tree for shelter and looked around realizing how comfortable this place was. They then settled there giving it the appropriate name.
